Fish Ladder

St. Marys is home to what is believed to be the oldest fish ladder in Ontario! The ladder was presumably constructed in 1908, when the current dam was built. Damming rivers in order to power mills was a common practice in Ontario in the 19^th Century, but it led to isolating fish populations by blocking off their paths of travel along waterways. Resembling a set of stairs or boat locks, a fish ladder allows for fish to travel upstream at a dam.

Fish in the Thames River

A variety of fish species can be found in the Thames River. The most prominent species in the St. Marys area include:

• Northern Pike
• Yellow Perch
• Small Mouth Bass
• Pumpkinseed
• Common Carp
